Simple Life Changing Laundry System
Laundry is the worst. It’s time consuming and never ending. We have a family of 5. Two of our kids are teenagers and our youngest is constantly changing into different outfits throughout the day. Anyone else have a kid like that? I’m always doing laundry. Always. I’ve tried a few different ways of tackling this ominous chore, but nothing has ever really worked. I finally got fed up with the amount of time I was spending on it, and I came up with a simple life changing laundry system that actually works! Let me share it with you.

Do at least one load of laundry each day.
Even if it’s a small load, do it. Just make sure it actually comes out of the dryer by the end of the day! It can get extremely overwhelming when the piles start to form and you have to spend all day doing nothing else but laundry. Tackling one load at a time, each day, makes it more manageable. Trust me you’ll never run out of things to wash. If all the clothes are clean, throw your rugs, sheets, blankets, etc. in. There’s always something that can be washed!
Use a no-fold system for your kid’s clothes.
This is it. This is the key to this laundry system and how you can get your time back. Think about the amount of time you spend folding all of your kid’s clothes. Don’t fold them anymore, have them do it! Wash them, dry them, but don’t fold them. Sure they could do the whole process, but in my experience they end up making a bigger mess out of the laundry room than I want to deal with. Plus, I’m kind of a control freak. I want things done my way, so this works out perfectly.
Setting up the no-fold system.
You could do this a bunch of different ways, but I just used what we had on hand for now. Eventually I’d like to do a built-in, but that’s for another day! I had an extra bookshelf that just happened to fit just enough laundry baskets for our family. I grabbed a basket for each kid, one basket for their towels, and an extra one for the rest of the laundry (the stuff I actually fold). When clothes come out of the dryer, I just sort them into the baskets. Each day the kid’s come home and check their basket. It’s up to them to make sure their basket gets emptied, folded, and put up. My kid’s are a little older, but we do have a 7 year old and even he folds and puts up his own clothes!

What do you do with the dirty clothes?
The kid’s have this laundry basket in their bathroom for their clothes, and a smaller one in the hallway for their towels. When it’s full they bring it to the laundry room for me to wash. Now I do have to remind them sometimes to do this, but it works. They also clean on Friday’s, so that helps with this! You can check out that Mom hack HERE. My husband and I have our own laundry basket in our bathroom.

Our laundry room is small and doubles as our pantry, so it’s better we don’t have the dirty clothes in there. Not only that, but having the laundry basket in the kid’s bathroom helps minimize the amount of clothes they throw on the floor.
This system has freed up so much of my time. I’ve learned over the many years of being a stay at home Mom that I can’t do everything by myself and when I try to, I end up super overwhelmed. I try to get my kids involved in taking care of and cleaning their spaces and things. I think this teaches them great life skills that they will take into adulthood. I just remind them that we all live here, and we all need to work together to keep things clean.

I hope this simple life changing laundry system helps motivate you to come up with your own system that works for you and your family! Get your time back from folding clothes constantly and use it on something else you’d rather do. Remember that it’s okay to have others help, even if you are a stay at home Mom and it’s your “job”. You have to fill your cup too in order to fill everyone else’s.

I love this Alicia!!! You make things so simple and yet effective! Iβve also done the one load a day system for years. But I never made sure it was out of the dryer, I like that. The last two years (maybe only a year and a half) Iβve become lazy with the laundry, but I do really like this idea! I do not have the space (yet) for the baskets and even if I did with my youngest being 15 I donβt know how long Iβll really need it. Thank you for the encouragement to start the load of laundry everyday again!
Aww! Absolutely! If you don’t have the room for it, you can just lay out the baskets on the floor and sort. When they are empty, just stack them up for the next time.
