How To Organize A Small Fridge

Does anyone else have the world’s smallest fridge? Okay, I know it’s probably not that small but it sure feels like it! With no organization, things were everywhere and never made sense. The kids were always knocking stuff over, and I can’t even count the amount of times a casserole dish fell out and broke. Plus we truly wasted a lot of food, because we could never find anything. No matter how much I “straightened” it up, things always ended up everywhere. Kids are fun! So how do you organize a small fridge?

Take everything out and declutter.

The first step is always to completely clear the space you are trying to organize, then get rid of everything you no longer need. Check out my post on decluttering HERE.

In this case I threw out anything that had passed its expiration date, got rid of old leftovers, and threw out anything I knew we wouldn’t eat. This really helps see what you have, plus gives you a blank canvas to work with!

Make a rough plan.

I say rough, because plans tend to change! I almost always change things around after I really get into a space and play around. For my fridge I knew I had to use my vertical space, because a lot of it was being wasted. So I came up with some ideas on how I could utilize that space. Honestly I got a handful of things I didn’t end up using, but are still awesome ideas that might work for a different fridge/situation. Stay tuned for a blog post on more fridge organization ideas! It’s okay to get extra stuff, play around with it all, then choose what ultimately works best for you.

Here’s what I came up with to organize my small fridge.

Stacking! I realized that this was key for organizing a small fridge.

  • Acrylic Stackable Fridge Bins – I wanted the bins to be clear, so you could easily see what was in the fridge. This set was perfect! I ended up not using one of the bins, because – small fridge problems, but I ended up using it in my pantry organization. So win win.
  • Stackable Can Organizer – This was an awesome find for me, because we have a lot of cans. You know, everyone needs their own kind of soda.
  • Slide-out Baskets with Handles – I think this little guy is most commonly used in a bathroom or under a sink, but in my case this works awesome in our fridge to hold all our kid’s snacks! That’s the beauty of organization, think outside of the box and just do what works best.
  • Turn Table – This is not stackable, but honestly it’s hard to stack anything on our top shelf because it blocks the fridge light. This was the perfect solution instead of stacking. I just put all of our most used items on it so they are easily accessible.
Labels

This was my last and absolute favorite touch I gave my fridge organization! If you have kids you know they need clear direction, this is as clear as it gets. Plus, if we are being honest, it’s just cute and gives your organization that finished look! These labels are water resistant and on a clear backing, so it almost looks like they are just a part of the bins. So good!

I can’t even tell you how much we needed this fridge organization! Aside from our pantry, this space is the most used space in our house. It’s so important to create a system that works, especially in those high traffic spaces. Everything has a place and it’s all super easy to get to, which is key!

I have a small fridge/freezer as well. In addition to these great ideas, I was just doing what I did. I had extra wire shelving (the kind that goes in the closet). I cut the shelves to size for making extra fridge and freezer shelving. Works great!
