Fireplace Accent Wall Transformation
Remember when we started our fireplace wall project!? If you haven’t read that post yet, you can check it out HERE. Well, we are finally done! It was been a long journey to get here, but we learned a lot of lessons along the way. I’m so excited to finally share our finished fireplace accent wall transformation!
BEFORE & AFTER
Here’s what we did differently.
This time around, we used thicker boards. Luckily we had some that were the perfect size laying around in our garage from another project. They were white pine 1×6’s. We also put a bigger gap in between each board. My husband made us some spacers out of scrape wood, but if you are curious we used about the width of 3 nickels. Just changing those two things made a huge difference in how this project turned out.
Like I said in my previous post, when it comes to using a dark color I think one of the best ways to create a distinct line between each board is to create a shadow. Keep in mind that this depends a lot on the light in your space. I would recommend doing some sample boards first to see what works best in your specific space before you start your project!
Mantle & Trim
We’ve done a lot of projects and have a lot of random wood in our garage, so this entire project was made out of those. Thankfully! We decided on a floating wood mantle and yes! My husband made that too. He’s amazing! It was actually pretty simple. We secured it to the wall with a French cleat. You can go check out my YouTube video, HERE, if you want to see how we did it! The mantle is stained with Special Walnut, and it’s so pretty. It’s actually one of my favorite stains. The wall is already really dark and I didn’t want the mantle to get lost, so one coat of this stain worked perfect!
My husband just ripped down some wood for the trim and used a router to put the smallest notch in it. Unfortunately when our builders put the marble up, it wasn’t straight so we had to cover that up. We did leave as much marble exposed as we possibly could though! It’s just too pretty to cover up. To finish it up, we painted the trim and the quarter round that was previously there the same color as the rest of the wall.
The final look!
There were a LOT of people who told me this project was a terrible idea, but I didn’t listen to them! I knew what I wanted and I had complete faith that my Husband and I could do it. I am so glad that I went with my gut and just did what I wanted, because I’m so in love with how it turned out! The lesson here, be bold enough to do what you love and don’t worry about what others think. Your home is your space and you are the only one who lives in it, so ENJOY it!
I’m obsessed! It seriously changed the whole vibe of our living room and I’m living for it!
