How to Make a Chunky Hand-Knit Blanket
This is a DIY I’ve wanted to do for such a long time! I’m obsessed with blankets. I literally have them everywhere, all over the house. My husband is always telling me I don’t need more, but I personally feel like you can’t have too many! I also really enjoy crocheting, so I was excited to try this. Here is how you can make your own chunky hand-knit blanket!
Let me first start out by saying, I think I made this way more complicated than it needed to be. So if you are anything like me and are slightly a perfectionist that likes to overcomplicate things, this is for you. Let me help you.
Supplies
- Yarn. I wanted a really fluffy soft blanket, so I used the Bernatยฎ Blanket Big™ Yarn from Michaels. This yarn is amazing! So incredibly soft. The color I chose is called Plum Purple. I would suggest getting yarn when it’s on sale to make it more affordable. You need 6-7 skeins depending on how big you want your blanket.

Some Tips
- This yarn is pretty stretchy, which really threw me off. To be honest I made and re-made my blanket a bunch of times! I wanted it to be about 4’x5′, so I made my first row of chains 48″. By the time I got to the 4th or 5th row, the width was bigger than that 48″. I’m not a professional, but I think it’s just because it’s hard to really make all your stitches the same exact size. Once I decided to make my first row of chains slightly smaller than 48″, it seemed to work out better. I really wanted to stay around the 4′ width, because the wider you make it the more skeins of yarn you need.
- I ended up doing 26 stitches, which was close to 4′ after the blanket was done and had stretched out a little. The amount of stitches you decide on is really going to depend on how big you make your stitches though.
- Keep your stitches some what loose. You don’t want them super tight. The yarn is big, so you can get away with looser stitches and I think it looks better in the end.
- Try to keep your stitches all the same size, but don’t worry too much about it. It’ll even itself out as you keep creating rows. Don’t worry so much about it being perfect and just enjoy doing it. Even if there are spots that you think are not perfect, it’ll get hidden in the chunky yarn and be fine!
Finished Blanket!
I love it so much! This thing is so big and fluffy. I know this is going to quickly turn into one of my favorite blankets! If you try making one of your own chunky blankets, make sure you send me a picture. I’d love to see it!!
Cute! I have been meaning to get back into knitting and crochet, what a great project!
It’s so easy once you get passed the first couple of rows! You should definitely try it!!
This blanket is so cute
Thank you!
I think it would end up too heavy to handle and hurt my arthriytis in one hand. I mean im young ish but get cramps in my hand playing guitar so i dont think i could handle blanket. Is Michaels overseas as Im in Australia and i like normal wool not the crinkled one?
The yarn is incredibly light. I made a crib size for my granddaughter
How fun! Love that.
I am making a throw, but I am at a standstill because I donโt know what to do at the ends of each row. Do I make an extra loop on both sides? Help! Iโm doing this for Christmas Thanks!
